It really depends on what you're trying to play, but for the most part Ibanez is a really good brand that doesn't usually cost too much. If you can spend a little more money I would suggest a schecter.

I always tell my students the same thing - walk before you run. There's no need to start with more than a 4-string, unless you have a 5-string gig lined up! Once you work hard and master the 4, then you can move on.
