"All my favourite things!" 4

I want to learn guitar ( i am 18) would buyig a miniguitar help for me to learn the instrument ? also how long would it take me to be good enough to make melodies ?

Don't buy a mini guitar. There are plenty of cheap guitars (used ones under $100) that will do you a lot better in the long one. There are different mini guitars. There are some with regular necks and small bodies. Those are ok. Small guitars will...

Is it possible to play free jazz or modern jazz on the guitar?
"All my favourite things!" 1

I've always been a huge fan of Grant Green and George Benson, but it seems that the current modern jazz guys ( Joshua Redman, Wynton, Christian McBride, Chick Corea) don't feature any guitar players in their bands. It's mostly quartet or quintet...

You have only mentioned the upper crust of todays jazz scene. There is a lot going on down in the soil.

Check out Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Monder, Oz Noy, and Mike Moreno. These guys are active today, and they are for real.

What paint to use to paint my acoustic guitar?
"All my favourite things!" 3

So my friend bought this 1/2 sized acoustic guitar a few months ago just for novelty. By this time all the strings are broken and the tuning pegs are gone. He was about to throw it away. I asked for it since...

Oil paints would take forever to dry, and would not stick to the varnish properly- probably resulting in ruining your wall!

I would grab some sandpaper, and give it a quick scrub down to give the paint something to grip to....

can a baritone be restrung as a standard electric guitar?
"All my favourite things!" 2

i have a schecter baritone, its super mega sounding but the novelty has worn off, and i love the design and quality so much that i would love to use it as a rythm guitar.....i wonder if simply putting reg. strings will be so easy and work?

It depends on how the guitar was set up. Do you use standard gauged strings? If you use the heavier baritone strings, you'll probably have to change the nut and maybe the bridge. You will most likely also have to adjust the tension rod. Put a...

Novelty/experimental guitars...?
Electric Guitar Birthday Cake

Has anyone ever made a ridicously oversized guitar that was as tall as a person that functioned (custom parts and scale length, etc.)?

What over novelty/experimental guitars have existed? I read about one made from granite.

I've made several guitars out of various materials (cardboard, concrete, old kitchen counter) though nothing as large as a person. Here's a link to some wild custom/novelty guitars. Enjoy ;-)

Concert review: The Dead Weather scorch the Crystal Ballroom

Jack White reached into his overflowing songbook for just the right song to open the Dead Weather's steaming-hot concert at the Crystal Ballroom Saturday night.

It wasn't a track from the White Stripes or the Raconteurs -- White keeps his many musical projects separate while making a complete commitment to them, one at a time -- but a more surprising blast from the recent past. "Portland, Oregon," the Grammy-winning duet White sang with Loretta Lynn on "Van Lear Rose," the excellent 2004 album he produced for her, got the full Dead Weather treatment: Bluesy, smokey, and just a little dangerous.

"Well, Portland, Oregon and slow gin fizz," White sang from behind his drum kit, with Alison Mosshart howling along out front. "If that ain't love then tell me what is."

Mosshart can't match Lynn's sultry voice and down-home soul (nobody can, except maybe the ghost of Patsy Cline), but she does have a spitfire personality and effortless charisma that matches White's.
