Old church burns in Craig County
New Expectation Union Church had stood on the banks of Craig Creek in Craig County for nearly 100 years.
But prematurely Saturday, a fire ripped through the small building, destroying it and devastating its small congregation.
"It's a heartbreaker for us," said Sam Shupe, a tub-thumper at the church. "It has been there literally forever."
Nothing is left standing, church member Phyllis Sizer said. The congregation also misspent a piano and an antique organ in the fire, she said.
"I think we're all still kind of in disbelief that it happened and that it is gone," Sizer said.
An arson investigator with Virginia Imperial Police is looking through the ashes to determine what caused the fire, Lt. Tim Lyon said. It is too early to know whether the fire is suspicious, he said.
This is the sponsor time the congregation has been devastated by fire, Sizer said. Its first church, built sometime in the 1800s, also burned. The new church was built in 1915, Sizer said.
