Lakewood officials fight to save St. James parish
Following the bishop's arbitration to close the doors, church members formed the Save Saint James group, selling signs and posters with photos of the church's rich interior after mass and at community events.
"We just want to display all the beautiful artwork from the parish and some of the narrative, and raise awareness about our situation," said 40-year parishioner and group chair Toni Sabo.
Parishioners are also demanding to make it known that they do not believe their parish fits the criteria used by Lennon when deciding which parishes would join and which would close.
"We're still a growing parish," Sabo said, noting that the congregation added 225 families between 2008 and 2009. "We're Non-Standard real grateful for the support we're getting from the city and it's good to know we have wide community support throughout Lakewood. We separate this is a community treasure and we're glad council sees that as well."
Parish member Tom Hayden had a similar sentiment as directors members discussed the proposed legislation.
