Actually, fewer people than we might think take advantage of the chance to sign up to be an organ donor.
To do so, you just have to check a box on your driver’s license.
Unfortunately, the national rate of participation is just 38 percent. That is fewer than two of every five drivers.
Louisiana, by the way, leads the nation in its rate. Sixty-four percent of Louisiana drivers are signed up to be organ donors.
They know that even if something happens to them, doctors will be able to use their organs to save or improve other lives.
That is a powerful thought.
“If you have the ability to donate and save someone’s life, that is a blessing to you. It saves lives. It extends lives,” said James Charles, a former principal of Ellender High and Gibson Elementary.
And Charles should know. His life has been dramatically improved by organ donations. In 2008, he received two kidneys, an operation that allowed him to stop his regimen of three dialysis treatments a week.
