The students in my class play a set of pipes which I cut from a long plastic conduit pipe.
Each student takes a pipe representing one pitch and slaps one end of the pipe on cue.
The set of pipes is in tune with itself, but is sharp...
The simplistic calculation (length as a multiple of half-wavelengths) isn't good enough for a musical instrument because the antinode at the open end of the pipe is actually a bit beyond the end of the pipe (and finding this location is a dandy...

Hi everyone, need some realistic field notes on Organ Pipes National Park VIC. I am having trouble with finding field notes on the tessalated rocks and rosette rock at organ pipes, the notes i do find are RAR filed.
Thank you!
Hi, Em !
Gee, I am good to you!
I have been slaving here trying all sorts of magic to find an answer.

Organ pipe A, with both ends open, had a fundamental frequency of 300 Hz. The third harmonic of organ pipe B, with one end open, has the same frequency as the second harmonic of pipe A.
How long are (a) pipe A and (b) pipe B?

A both-ends-open pipe of length L resonates at a wavelength О» = 4L. О» = C/f. Thus L(A) = C/(4f) = 340/1200 m.
The 2nd harmonic of pipe A = 600 Hz. This is the 3rd harmonic of 200 Hz, so 200 Hz is the fundamental frequency of pipe B. A...
i would like to know how the vibrations (and sound waves) are changed by different types of pipe (different shape, length and width) leading to a different sound.

There are several different variables. The main one is size--the larger the pipe, the lower the resonance or pitch. Another is what the pipe is made of. Most organ pipes are made either of wood or metal, and that can have an effect. Even different...
Help please + Explain
When air molecules are at a higher temperature, they move faster, and they transmit sound more quickly. Conversely, when the temperature decreases, molecules move more slowly and transmit sound at a lesser speed.
The resonant...

Curley appointment for town hall organ
Internationally acclaimed organist Carlo Curley will be playing the Auckland Town Hall Organ in September.
In an area of entertainment not particularly known for it's hype and extreme superlatives, Curley is being billed as the "Pavarotti of the Organ".
Curley is good fodder for critics and opera fans. He famously declared "Bach invented rock and roll". He also described one particular composition by Handel as a "real toe-tapper". During one performance he warned his "size 12's are going to go bananas with smoke rising from the pedalboard".
The town hall organ is at the centre of a revival after multi-million dollar resotrations were completed earleir this year.
Originally built in 1911 by the English firm of Hill, Norman & Beard, the organ was a gift to the city from former mayor Henry Brett. The gift was conditional on a number of free concerts being staged each year, a tradition that has been upheld to this day.
The organ fell from grace when it was dramatically altered around 1970 in line with the neo-baroque movement prevalent at that time. This involved removing or replacing many pipes and lowering its wind pressures.
