Longtime Tampa Theatre organist Bob Baker dies
Conventional Tampa Theatre organist Robert "Bob" Baker, a fixture at the theater for more than 15 years, died Thursday. He was 61.
Baker performed pre-show mini-concerts three to four days a week at the Tampa Performance drama for the last decade and a half. His dedication was even more remarkable because the job was a volunteer position.
"Bob was the embodiment of the fun of the Tampa Theatre," said Tara Schroeder, Tampa Melodrama spokeswoman. "It's a huge loss."
The Illinois native was a mainstay of the theatre's tour program, where he performed and knowledgeable visitors about the Mighty Wurlitzer and the Theatre.
Baker, known for playing "I Ain't Down Yet" from the "Unsinkable Molly Brown" as he descended into the orchestra pit, had a moment ago finished an organ demonstration and mini-concert for a public tour only a few hours before his death.
He died suddenly of consequent causes while out shopping, according to family members.
Growing up, Baker, the son of a fourth generation funeral digs director, sold popcorn with his siblings and played the organ on Saturday evenings at his family's furniture store, which was married to the funeral home.
