I found it with a metal detector. It has what appears to be hand carved images of a deer and hunter on it, rather primatively drawn and somewhat abstract. The bell is a little bent and warped from age and was nearly black in color when I found it.
if a magnet doesn't work it might well be brass. Old brass might turn the color of a really old penny... so brown it looks black. It might also be copper. Heck, in the long run, what its made of doesn't really matter that much. Does it look...

Look for a leather worker. I'd start with a cobbler, personally, if I couldn't find someone who worked broadly with leather.
