So I've got a blanket in my bass drum and it still doesn't sound right. I don't know wiether I should tighten the head more or put a bigger blanket in there. Any advice?
The term stuffing the bass drum is a little misleading. You don't actually stuff it. You can use a blanket, pillow, or a folded beach towel. For the sake of explaining, I'm going to use a pillow. You would lay the pillow in the bass drum flat on...
Bob Gatzen explains how to tune your bass drum to perfection. Special thanks to Bob just for making this video.
Christmas is coming up and i want to have a very effective bass drum pedal for heel toe. Any suggestions?
It will work with any pedal. I would recommend a double-chain drive pedal over a strap or single-chain drive pedal as these always seem to break easily for me. If your are going to be playing a lot of double-bass then you will want something...

I'm recording a drumkit. I'm pretty satisfied with my drum sound, but I'd like to have a more defined kick drum sound. It seems logical to me to remove the front drum head, but how does this really affect the sound of the bass drum, and the sound...
removing the head will stop some of the kick reverberation and you will also lose some of the deep bass response.
if you are using an equalizer on the drums, try adding more mid range.
using an equalizer on the kick can change a lot...
I have a Tama Imperialstar and the bass drum has a stock head. I've already put a huge pillow in it to reduce overtone but i still feel like there's something else i should do. Maybe the head is to tight? I know it isn't the kick because it's a Tama,
This is extremely vague dude. Professional sound can be EXTREMELY muffled or not so muffled or a little trebbley. What type of sound are you specifically going tor?
I was wondering what the sizes of Bass drum port holes had to do with the sound and the resonance?
and what would sound better for miking them, would a 4 inch be better then 5? or A 5 inch better then 4?
The bigger the hole, the less resonance you will have. Like the other guy said a difference of an inch won't be noticeable enough to matter. Now you put a 10 inch hole in the head, you're gonna notice. Also, where the hole is located makes a...
Och, another Muir's a pipin'
(Jul 27, 2010)
There's a wee Muir already piping away at his practice chanter in his Dundas home, but at four-years-old Luke is still a mite shy of the minimum age requirement for band membership.
Just give him some time, though, and he may yet represent another generation of Dundas Muirs doing the valley town proud at the old bladder, snares and bass.
Luke's mother, Katherine Muir, is playing up a Highland gale this summer, as are the rest of the Dundas Pipes and Drums, beating out the measure and keening the notes and drones.
If you're a follower of this kind of thing, you'll have noted that the Dundas Pipes and Drums came in first at the Embro Highland Games near Woodstock on Canada Day, second at the Oshawa games the weekend after, and two weekends ago they came first again at the Cambridge Highland Games, winning best pipe corps, best bass drum and best corps honours.
"It's been a fantastic few weeks," says Katherine, who is a piper with the Dundas Pipes and Drums. She's been playing with the corps since 1993 when she was eight-years-old.
