Odd Jobs: Trinity Church's Bell Ringers
Trinity Church on Wall Street is famous for its bells. Less well known but equally crucial are the devoted ringers who show up every Sunday to ring those bells.
The ringers, as many as 12 on some Sundays, come together at 10:30 a.m. in the church’s tower, signaling churchgoers and passersby of the morning service. A sizable number of these ringers are British expats who say they find comfort in the sound.
“[Bell-ringing] is obviously quite rare in America relative to England,” said Jenny Mackley, 28, who moved from London eight months ago. The newly minted Upper West Side resident wasn’t sure how to establish herself in the city, so at her mother’s urging, she showed up at Trinity one Sunday.
“I turned up on a Sunday and everybody was really welcoming and friendly and I’ve been coming ever since,” she said.
After 45 minutes, the ringers close the tower’s shutters to prevent sound from escaping, in case any ringers decide to practice or play for fun. Prior to installing the shutters, neighbors had complained about how frequently and loudly the bells played.
