Yes you can use any headphone you want but if you spend at lest $20 at Target for Sony dynamic stereo headphones it would sound way better than some cheap ipod headphones.

They should be loader than the sounds of your sticks hitting the rubber pads or cymbals. You hear more wood on the pads than you hear coming out of earphones. I think you will only hear cymbal anyways.
