For 15 seasons, a locomotive bell, mounted on a wooden frame that sits next to Suns owner Peter Bragan Sr., has rung in harmony with all of the home runs hit by Suns players at either Wolfson Park or the Baseball Grounds, and after every Suns home win.
Bragan was presented with the bell as a gift from CSX Transportation on May 18, 1996. He’s also the only one who rings the bell, except for a handful of games he missed the past 15 years because of illness, in which case his son, Peter Bragan Jr. — club president and general manager — has filled in.
The tradition of the bell clanging after home runs and a Suns victory has become a fan favorite.
“Just as soon as fans see that it’s a home run by one of our guys or we’ve just gotten the last out in a Suns win, you see people’s head start to turn around and watch,” said Bragan Sr., who celebrated his 87th birthday last Saturday. “Everyone wants to see and hear the bell going.”
