'Mockingbird' song hooks readers
The librarian reads it each year, and the book never gets old. The attorney last read it in college, but the story has stayed with him for decades. The blind girl couldn't read it at all, but she could listen and the novel gave her another reason to become a lawyer.
The three Nebraskans are among millions of people worldwide who have read Harper Lee's classic, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a novel that marks its 50th year this month.
The story of a country lawyer's quest for justice is one of the most widely known and beloved works of modern fiction. Since its 1960 publication, the book won the Pulitzer Prize, Gregory Peck starred in a movie that netted three Oscars and schools have assigned the novel to English classes clear up to the present day. Generations of children across the globe have come of age to a story that, according to some reports, ranks second only to the Bible in surveys of favorite books.
That's not to say the book has no detractors. It has appeared on banned-book lists, and some Southern towns boycotted the 1962 movie; most recently, Malcolm Gladwell in the New Yorker said the book exposed the limits of its hero, Atticus Finch, who was not vociferous enough in condemning the racial code of his era.
