From time to time, I'll find myself in a room with an unattended piano.
This doesn't happen very often, as you might imagine. Pianos are pricey to buy and costly to maintain. Most places keep an instrument on the premises so a trained pianist can play it.
I would never touch one of those pianos.
But some establishments will use a piano simply for decor. You might find one set up in a hotel sitting room or near the fake fire in a ski lodge. A time-share manager might install a piano in the foyer to suggest elegance, then put flowers on it.
If no signage forbids it, I might sit down at a piano like that. First I'll glance around furtively, then pull out the bench and settle on it. If the instrument has a keyboard cover, I gingerly raise that and let it clunk softly against the bumpers.
