Scotland's Great Highland Bagpipes
Pipes of pride
But when he's done, the instrument carries his distinctive style and tone. "Every maker has a unique quality to his sound," MacLellan said.
He makes each instrument "with great care from start to finish," he said. "In the beginning, it was hard to let go of them."
One of MacLellan's instruments will travel to his homeland of Scotland with The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a month-long nightly festival of music, pageantry and demonstrations by military organizations and entertainers from around the world. Eighty Citadel band members leave Wednesday for the event, where they will perform six days a week.
MacLellan donated the instrument to the Sandy Jones Invitational, a bagpipe group that was raising money to help the cadets pay for the trip to Scotland, said Jeff Stevenson, who was The Citadel's pipe major when the band last went to the Edinburgh event in 1991. The invitational was planning to auction the pipes to raise money, Stevenson said.
