Contra Bassoon

Is it an interesting instrument to play?

It is interesting and the air support is challenging to acquire--but what's even MORE challenging is getting your hands on one. They're VERY VERY pricey and the liklihood a local high school or college has one is VERY slim.

It sounds to me like a contrabassoon with a low 'A' extension (usually, the contra's lowest note is a Bb). This raises the upper 'U' bend way above the player's head and also make the bell quite a lot higher.

I could hear German composer Paul Hindemith applauding in his grave. More about him, and why, later.
