Sounds like you have leaky pads - take the upper and lower joints seperately; with the upper joint finger as if you were going to play a "C" (so 3 fingers down), put your left hand across the bottom of the joint to seal it, then blow...

Does anyone else play contra bass clarinet? How high is possible to play?

I have been playing for a few months, and I am wondering how high it can play. My instrument is all metal (I believe it is a selmer), it is tall, not wound up a lot. I can play high C# and have gotten high D out once, but not sure if it was it....


Those metals are usually a Leblanc. Fine instruments indeed - in fact, most contra players consider the Leblanc Paris to be the best contras made.

Technically, and mechanically, you should be able to play an F above the high C...

Added info for bass clarinet question!?

My bass clarinet is a Selmer Bundy with a serial number 38106. I'd like to know what year it was manufactured. (and thank you people who replied the first time I asked w/out enough info)


Bundy is a subsidiary of Selmer, and is also the name of Selmer's student model line. ANY instrument from Bundy is a student model (although some of them are quite good!).
